Whilst running a recent version may solve other problems and
should generally increase performance a little, it isn't
necessary to solve this problem.

Samba has several "Name Mangling" options that can be used to
solve this problem.  Search in smb.conf(5) via man(1) or at the
following site.

    http://au1.samba.org/samba/docs/man/smb.conf.5.html

For example, the following would force all new files to be
created with lower case filenames.

    mangle case = yes
    default case = lower
    preserve case = no
    short preserve case = no
