i have seen this on machines which have a windows 98
partition. unfortunately it's been so long since i saw it that i can't
remember if it was a 98 first edition or second edition problem. and the
only way we got around it was to delete all partitions and start over. we
couldn't seem to find our way out of it any other way. :-(
