Both, but it was already pretty fast at 2d.  I barely ever play Quake,
so fast for me means:

  2d: opaque windows drag smoothly in 1280x1024x16bpp

  3d: the Xscreensaver hacks (sprongies!!) look smooth not jerky

Running gcc they look just the same. :)
