Hi David,

A few things...

1. PnP: I've found that most motherboard BIOSes support some mechanism
for turning on BIOS initialisation of PnP devices usually something like
"PnP OS installed Y/N". Make this No. It means that when booting, PnP
cards will assigned IRQs etc at this point, and not by the OS. Be aware
if you run MS-W this may affect some of your devices (eg your modem).
Check the interrupts of your serial ports after making this change.

2. The device you said the modem was linked to was ttys02. Serial
devices should be ttyS0, ttyS1, ttyS2, etc. check this.

3. do a "cat /proc/interrupts. This will tell you what interrupts have
been initialised by the kernel and what devices they are assigned to.

4. install something like minicom, so you can talk to the modem
interactively and do at&f (reset to factory defaults) first to make sure
sound is turned on (eg you should hear dial tone).

HTH.
