No. Its not.

The way 56k modems work is to take advantage of digital lines. The only
analog communication is between your modem and your telephone exchange.

Incidentally, the only way to get a true 56k (56 kbit) connection is to be
within a meter of your telephone exchange. This is why you get 44000kbit
connections and the such.

The uplink speed on any 56k modem is actually 33.6 (max). 

The only way to actually be able to recieve a 56k connection from a v90
modem is to use digital equipment on the server end, not an off the shelf
analog modem (this is where my understanding gets fuzzy, having never seen
said equipment).

If you wanted to use modems for a link between two locations both using analog
you'd beconnecting at 33.6k (max) even if you had v90 modems.
