Use GNU GRUB.

http://www.gnu.org/software/grub/grub.en.html

GNU is Good(tm).

GNU GRUB is Very Good(tm).

It can boot almost anything you care to think of, it has tab completion on
paths and filenames, it can walk FFS, FAT16, EXT2 and Minix filesystems. It
can boot via a network. It can boot even when you blow away your kernel and
second stage. You never have to run it to update to a new kernel, just edit
the menu config file using your favourite text editor (dos or unix style).

And it can make you look like a complete hero[1] when placed in front of a
non-booting machine.

The docs are rather good, and while it may seem daunting at first, it only
takes around 5 minutes to learn the basic stuff that you will use.

Best of all, if you enable the BIOS virus protection on your boot sector, no
windows or other similar moronic operating systems can stop you getting to
linux to rescue the whole mess :)

And I've just made a mess in my pants.
