Hmm, correct me if I am wrong, but I thought cable modems ARE real modems.
I doubt if the data is transmitted as a baseband signal considering that the
cable also contains lots of other channels of other types of information.
The difference here is that the modulation is at a MUCH higher frequency (I
don't know what frequency though...) than you could ever possibly achieve
over normal copper cables used for telephony thus allowing much greater data
rates.
