Dear all,
just got my work-supplied new edition of legato networker/Solstice Backup 5.5.1
yesterday, and was impressed to discover the existence of a linux client
version. For those who don't know, networker is probably the most commonly used
"enterprise" sized/scalable backup utility around. (If you buy a server edition
of solaris you get networker included for free).

Yes, I know amanda is very nice, but there are some things it just can't handle
- like backup tape hardware for which the manufacturer won't release the scsi
command set (grrr...sun storedge l280....grrrgrrrgrr), so networker is the
easiest way to go.

I'm stoked about seeing it because it indicates that Legato is finally starting
to take the opensource community seriously. When they have a server version
available for linux and the *BSDs it'll be quite nice, but in the meantime it'll
be interesting to see whether any *BSD people can get the client to work.

cheers and happy gnu yir,
James C. McPherson
