It's the PGP signature which is the mysterious attachment.  Your
message consists of:

> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii
> Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable
> 
> bugger - consider this one signed - please I've had a hard day.  I was
etc.

(Mutt is using quoted printable for a text body that should
be plain 7-bit ascii...not a good idea.)

and:

> Content-Type: application/pgp-signature
> 
> -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE-----
etc.

...which will be opaque to any mailreader which does not grok the PGP
MIME content-types.
