It works that way for me now, too:

$ bash --version
GNU bash, version 2.03.0(1)-release (i386-pc-linux-gnu)
Copyright 1998 Free Software Foundation, Inc.

Ah.  Looks like a 1.x version of bash installed on an ageing RedHat
6.1 box was at fault.  I didn't realise at the time the shell wasn't
running on the user's more up-to-date Debian box.
