Well you won't be able to boot Linux off the 3 Gb partition as it is outside
the 1024 cyl limit.
However you could install a small boot partition inside the 8.4 Gb area and
then run all the Linux stuff from another partition. That is usually how it is
done

Yes that is probably the major problem. I normally install LILO on the mbr of
the booting hard drive...normally the C: drive. For a Win dual boot you will
need to install Windows first then Linux and the LILO files should pick up the
FAT32 partition so you can dual boot easily.
I always prefer to use the Linux FDISK manually but the newer disributions
make it more difficult to do this.
I find Linux fdisk much easier to use than the DOS fdisk as it has loads more
functionality and, once you get into it just hit "m" and it gives you all the
information you need.
