Two things absolutely positively *MUST* be compiled into the kernel, not as 
modules.

1) The root filesystem
2) The root block device

The reason being, before you've initialised those, the kernel will not have 
a filesystem to search for the module, or if it did, it would not have a 
block device to mount using that filesystem.
