A closer looks reveals the obvious: if you make it into Xsession, then
all output will probably be redirected to $HOME/.xsession-errors .  If
there isn't already enough in there to figure it out, then change the 
first line of Xsession from
   #!/bin/sh
to
   #!/bin/sh -v
and try logging in again - that should give you a bit more output.
