There are several possibilities.  My favourite is that you have some bad 
memory, so when the kernel is being uncompressed, you get to that bad spot, 
and the machine freezes.  Try turning on the BIOS full memory checks.

Did the machine at any time successfully boot?  Can you think of anything 
that might have changed since it last did boot?
