Why not play around with CORBA? I'm sure it would be way slow, but you
might even consider writting and running GNOME/KDE programs on the 486 and
try out their ORBs and mappings.
You _can_ get very small orbs[1] so this should be doable, even on a 486.
You could always try fnorb and python.
