Ghostscript can output to ppm/pbm (portable pixmap is the colour
equivalent).

These are the intermediate formats used by the PBMplus/NETPBM toolkit.
They're a simple uncompressed raster image. The idea is that instead
of needing N-squared converter programs to interchange, you use
PBM/PPM as the "standard intermediate" and only need 2n converters.

So "pstoppm <foo.ps | ppmtog3 >foo.g3" would be the canonical
toolchain for teh conversion using the NETPBM toolkit.

"apt-get install netpbm".
