I find this intriguing too.  If you have a sheep worrier from the middle
ages that has to worry about a undred sheep, and 99 of them get abducted by
a UFO, then that leaves just one sheep.  If that sheep has a heart attack at
the idea of no longer being able to follow all the other sheep, then that
leaves ZERO sheep.  Hence, these middle ages sheep worriers, priests and
associated followers and associates actually DID know about zero, but must
have decided to ignore it because zero is worth nothing.

Weren't there punch-card readers available back then anyway?  At least an
abacus?
