[ Humbug *General* list - semi-serious discussions about Humbug and
Unix-related topics. ]

I have a problem with my dialup router box here at home.

The problem is this. The modem won't dial a connection more than once
following a reboot. Maybe an extract from ppp.log will give you some idea.
I'm using debian 2.1, and connecting by using "pon uq".

First attempt:
Nov 15 14:43:43 dyno chat[225]: abort on (BUSY)
Nov 15 14:43:43 dyno chat[225]: abort on (NO CARRIER)
Nov 15 14:43:43 dyno chat[225]: abort on (VOICE)
Nov 15 14:43:43 dyno chat[225]: abort on (NO DIALTONE)
Nov 15 14:43:43 dyno chat[225]: abort on (NO ANSWER)
Nov 15 14:43:43 dyno chat[225]: send (ATZ^M)
Nov 15 14:43:43 dyno chat[225]: expect (OK)
Nov 15 14:43:43 dyno chat[225]: ATZ^M^M
Nov 15 14:43:43 dyno chat[225]: OK
Nov 15 14:43:43 dyno chat[225]: -- got it
Nov 15 14:43:43 dyno chat[225]: send (ATDT38640198^M)
Nov 15 14:43:43 dyno chat[225]: expect (CONNECT)
Nov 15 14:43:43 dyno chat[225]: ^M
Nov 15 14:44:12 dyno chat[225]: ATDT38640198^M^M
Nov 15 14:44:12 dyno chat[225]: CONNECT
Nov 15 14:44:12 dyno chat[225]: -- got it
Nov 15 14:44:12 dyno chat[225]: send (\d)
Nov 15 14:44:13 dyno pppd[224]: Serial connection established.
Nov 15 14:44:14 dyno pppd[224]: Using interface ppp0
Nov 15 14:44:14 dyno pppd[224]: Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/ttyS0

All works fine, however on the second attempt the output looks as follows:
Nov 15 15:24:12 dyno chat[412]: abort on (BUSY)
Nov 15 15:24:12 dyno chat[412]: abort on (NO CARRIER)
Nov 15 15:24:12 dyno chat[412]: abort on (VOICE)
Nov 15 15:24:12 dyno chat[412]: abort on (NO DIALTONE)
Nov 15 15:24:12 dyno chat[412]: abort on (NO ANSWER)
Nov 15 15:24:12 dyno chat[412]: send (ATZ^M)
Nov 15 15:24:12 dyno pppd[411]: Connect script failed
Nov 15 15:24:13 dyno pppd[411]: Exit.

A hardware reset of the modem doesn't solve the problem (power cycle), the
only solution I have come across is to reboot the machine (which doesn't
reset the external modem) This is sort of a pain because this box is on
24/7, and gets used for other things.

The setup hasn't changed and it worked (correctly) for months previously.

Any ideas?
