The BSD remote-shell tools (rsh, rcp etc.) are much maligned and often
disabled, but for sheer convenience you can't beat 'em.
Quick and dirty (this works, I've done it many times to get files
to/from our network tapedrive):
tar cf - somedirectory | rsh foobox dd of=/dev/sometape
substitute archive command and destination file as required.
