Yep, it is done with radio rather than microwave - lower bandwidth but
much better connection ability (ie, no line of sight req).

There are areas of frequency set aside for packet radio.  The ax25
protocol controls access afaik.

Cool.  So far responses have been good.  I've checkout the web pages for
about 4 suppliers and none of them mention costs.  Annoying :)  One
company said it would see 2x115k units for just under $2000.  Presumably
56k units and slower would be much cheaper than this.

I know you can get a 1200bps unit for $85 ($65 if you build it yourself :)
