Well I'm certainly no kind of expert on *nix but seems nobody else bothered
to respond so maybe I can help a little bit.

There is a little utility called "wvdial" thats included with Debian 2.1.9
and
available on the net for Redhat and I believe Slackware that takes all the
hocus pocus, voodoo,and other assorted  witchcraft out of this ppp stuff.
Its probably something the "experts" frown on because it makes the dialup
bit as simple as an exercise as it is with W*****s :). Late versions of
Redhat & Mandrake have a utility called "X-ISP" thats nearly as good too.
