[H-GEN] Mail problems

Hmmm... ok, I just noticed something while watching the output from the
sendmail log (using the -X option).  It seems that sendmail does not return
the 250 message to the MSES server until it has delivered the message to the
next server.  I have put some of the relevant log at the end of this
message.

Is this normal behaviour?  I thought that mail relaying just chucked the
message at the next server and then forgot about it.  This seems to be
waiting to see if it succeeded and then retrying if it fails (and defines
"fails" as taking more then 10 minutes).  
Is this perhaps something that ESMTP does?
Should I disable ESMTP?
