Ok,
At the risk of spamming the list again..... the problem is caused by
premature termination of the connection from our internal MSES to the
Sendmail gateway. If you want to see MSs info on this, look here
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q228/7/25.asp but it's not
a lot of help. We had actually figured this out before finding the article,
it just validated my thinking. I enabled logging on the MSES end and got
this info...
7/7/99 11:09:05 AM : >>> MAIL FROM:<mca at tams.com.au> SIZE=1193 RET=FULL
7/7/99 11:09:05 AM : <<< 250 <mca at tams.com.au>... Sender ok
7/7/99 11:09:05 AM : >>> RCPT TO:<general at lists.humbug.org.au>
NOTIFY=FAILURE,DELAY
7/7/99 11:09:05 AM : <<< 250 <general at lists.humbug.org.au>... Recipient ok
7/7/99 11:09:05 AM : >>> DATA
7/7/99 11:09:05 AM : <<< 354 Enter mail, end with "." on a line by itself
7/7/99 11:19:20 AM : 499 No routing hosts are reachable for
lists.humbug.org.au. Message subject: ""RE: [H-GEN] Open specific ports in
IP MASQ"". Rescheduling delivery for later.
As you can see, there was a 10 minute delay from sending the message until
it decided that the message had failed. So, something is causing the
connection to be closed and at this point, I really do not know which end to
blame. I am trying the following in an attempt to determine what is
happening....
tcpdump '(dst host belial.tams and dst port 25) or (dst host
pippin.tams and src port 25)'
Is there anything else I can do or any extra information I need to log to
find out what is going on here (possibly extra debugging on sendmail or
better options for tcpdump so I can see more of what is going on[1])?
Funnily enough, this is extremely similar to the problems I am having
sending mail through the CITEC gateway. I manage to send all the data to
them and then it sits there for a while and eventually times out, causing a
failure and retry of the message (although there is a slight difference, the
mail does NOT go through anyway)
Any help would be appreciated
Cheers
Michael Anthon
[1] I find tcpdump output to be a little cryptic still 8^)
