[H-GEN] Hanging while rebooting

I have a problem on a machine I am trying to set up with Debian. Whenever I
try to do a shutdown and reboot (either using the shutdown command or
alt-ctrl-del), it hangs. The last message goes like this...

Rebooting... GDT: Flushing all host drives .. Done.

I seem to recall reading something about problems rebooting somewhere, but I
can't find it (searched for several hours last night). Also, what is GDT ?

I have also been getting these errors on the same box
eth0: timeout waiting for Tx RDC
I got a lot of these the first time I used apt-get to install some packages
and the whole thing went berko till I rebooted (getting lots of errors
loading libraries and stuff, even ls didn't work) so I am assuming it is
actually causing corruption of file transfers.

TIA
