when I recently got my hands on one of these terminals, I started trying
to boot via NFS, and it took me only a few minutes (bar stupid mistakes)
to get my terminal booting flawlessly.  

perhaps trying NFS instead of TFTP might make the problem mysteriously go
away?  I know that this approach isn't terribly scientific, but you
never know :)
