[H-GEN] I can't login - HELP!

I know it's bad form to follow-up ones own post -- but I thought I'd better let
y'all know that I solved it.

Don't know much about shadow passwords -- but apparently I  was missing
/etc/shadow

So cp /etc/shadow.bak /etc/shadow solved it.

I have now convinced myself of the need for a UPS and proper back-up system.
