Are PCI modems supported under linux?

My father just bought an IBM aptiva and the PCI modem was not
automatically recognised. Windows 98 (pre-installed) calls it a Rockwell
HCF 56k modem. Would anyone know if this can be assigned as a serial
port (eg. ttyS2 ) using setpci and setserial. Or is the solution a
little more complex.

There are no IRQ conflicts.

By the way:
The ESS SOLO soundcard is well supported.
The Savage4 chipset support for X (provided by S3) allows all
resolutions but is a little buggy.

Thanks in advance.
