Or do "su -" instead, the "-" meaning "Make it a login shell", which
in turn means, forget all of your old environment settings, and run the
appropriate scripts to work out new ones.
Also, consider install sudo and using that instead of su. It's a bit more
convenient sometimes, and quite a lot more configurable.
