Well, I recompiled the 2.2.11 kernel on the Mandrake box, and all of this
silliness seems to have disappeared.  It looks like a 2.2.9 problem with the
VIA-Rhine drivers.

Oh well, all's well that ends well.

Now, for the diald config...
