these two options need to be enabled
Encrypted passwords = yes
smb passwd file = /etc/smbpasswd
the drawk backs with using encrypted passwords is that you have to
maintain a seconed passwd file. to add users to the samba passwd file,
you use smbpasswd command. This is alright if you have a dedicated
samba server and the users don't use mail etc but for a general purpose
workgroup box, this get's annoying.
there is probably a workaround but I havn't read the latest info on the
latest samba's for some time
