I have a number of PPP connections active on the one Linux Box (RH5.2)

I am using the ifcfg-pppx scripts for two connections and mgetty for the
dial-in.

The interface numbers that are assigned to these seem to be random.

eg:

[marshallj at server1 marshallj]$ ifconfig
<snip>
ppp1 Link encap:Point-to-Point Protocol
          inet addr:139.130.67.107 P-t-P:139.130.67.1 Mask:255.255.0.0
          UP POINTOPOINT RUNNING MTU:1500 Metric:1
          RX packets:563630 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:615552 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
          collisions:0
          Memory:30e038-30ec04

ppp3 Link encap:Point-to-Point Protocol
          inet addr:203.108.63.250 P-t-P:203.108.72.14 Mask:255.255.255.0
          UP POINTOPOINT RUNNING MTU:1500 Metric:1
          RX packets:112673 errors:2 dropped:2 overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:178790 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
          collisions:0
          Memory:2f8038-2f8c04

ppp1 is actually ifcfg-ppp1, but ppp3 is ifcfg-ppp0

When mgetty receives a dial-in, it will most likely go to ppp0 or ppp2.

Is there a way to fix the interface numbers with the actual config numbers?
One would get confused and enter

ifdown ppp3

to kill the second entry above (which would be incorrect and quite nasty in
some cases)
