Certainly.

Can't see the benefit..perhaps a slight speed improvement (since it's not
going via the filesystem section of the kernel), but that'd be minimal.

No.  It may give speed improvements to do so, but you can safely ommit
it.  Note that if you do use it, then you should be consistant about
using it in both reading and writing.
