I do not know. The first version of WordPerfect did evolve IIRC from a VMS
text editor (hence escape being F3 not F1, and other oddities). I believe
that WP4 (and 4.2 in particular) were written with a great many
enhancements for the law-branch of Utah.

There was an article on C|Net about Corel deliberately targetting the
legal profession with future versions of its suite. A good idea, one that
seems to be working for Apple and the Schools market.
