actually I meant :%s/$/^M/ 

If you have a dos text file, then to remove the silly line ends (in vi)
you go :%s/^M// to remove those pesky ctrl-M chars at the end of the
lines. So why can't you just add a few to the end of lines when you want
to go the other way? vim seems to be a bit microsoftish and not let you
do silly/useful things like that. 

^M obviously = ctrl-v ctrl-m
