Humbug,

I may be missing the point of this "compare that cache with that
server" thread; however, the following may be of interest.

    http://squid.nlanr.net/Squid/CacheDigest/cache-digest-v5.txt

As I understand it, Squid currently performs a 'refresh' of the
objects to see if it has changed and ensures that this data is
shared amongst the hierarchy. That is, Squid currently implements
something more advanced that a "compare that cache with that server".
This is all without Cache Digests, a non-default feature of Squid,
and the story gets even more complicated (and faster and better :-)
when you enable them.

Of course, if typing this at 2am means that I'm wrong, then feel free
to correct me, possibly even to general at lists.humbug.org.au if you
feel up to it.

Yours sincerely,
