As mentioned earlier by someone the package alien does the required task
well.  The only problem I ran into with alien is that some dists weren't
being 100% FSSTND compliant, and as a result occassionally a new directory
was added, which wasn't a big problem.

Alien will convert between any two of deb, rpm and tgz (tgz being the
standard for Slackware).

Yeah I know I'm late into this thread but catching up on mail,etc :)
