[H-GEN] IDE CDrom on a non-plugnplay

I am trying to get an 8x ide cdrom to be recognised on a 486 ASUS PVI
486 SP3 M/B.
It has been flashed up to the latest BIOS revision for non PnP M/B's but
I still cannot get it to locate the CD. Not even on the Primary as the
only connected unit set as Master. 
Most other combinations had also been tried.

The M/B, I believe, will take one of the PnP EEPROM's but I cannot find
one.

Does anyone have any ideas or experience with this sort of situation or
know moe about these EEPROMs?
