[H-GEN] More on VPN

Well, I managed to get a VPN connection going between home and work...
YAY. The problem that I was having was the -t option to ssh to force it
to assign a tty. I still have a few problem with routing between the 2
subnets, but that's a firewall issue (setting the default policy to deny
gets everything working) which I will work out.

There is one thing that has happened that has me a little curious.
After having got this all working, the connection to my ISP dropped out
and redialled. Now, this connection is always made as ppp0, the VPN
connection I made came up as ppp1. After fiddling with the VPN stuff,
this connection was being made as ppp2 (I just checked my work machine
and it's now ppp1 instead of ppp0 as usual). The thing I don't quite
follow is how the ppp devices are assigned a number. I can't find
anything in the man page about it. Does anyone know what controls the
number of the ppp interface?

This is not a big deal at work since I have a fixed IP, but my home
setup uses a script that gets run after dialling in to update the
dynamic DNS address for the machine so I can find it when I am away from
home and this script relies on it being ppp0 (I guess I should also
change the script to accommodate the possibility, but I'd like to
understand WHY it changes first)
