Subject: ISOC Mourns the Death of Jon Postel

Dear Internauts,

It is with the deepest sadness that I inform you that our beloved
IANA, Jonathan B. Postel, passed away last Friday, October 16th,
while recovering from heart surgery at St. John's Hospital in
Santa Monica, California. Internaut Danny Cohen was with him and
told me that his death was sudden but surely painless. Jon was
the first individual member of the Internet Society and surely
one to whom a great debt of gratitude is owed.

Many things are in the planning stages to remember and honor Jon,
you will find some of them at the ISOC home page: www.isoc.org.

We've lost our North Star, but our compasses will still work if
we remember Jon's wisdom and guidance. He's gone on ahead of us,
but I look forward to seeing him again, someday.

Vint Cerf
Chairman
Internet Society
