[H-GEN] sorting out the cats...more or less

Hi
Can anyone shed some light on this for me ?
I'm sorting a text file using
sort -o output input
which results in the creation of the output file (which is the same size,
same permissions, same everything as far as I can see as the file input).
I can cat output, which displays the file and shows me that it is indeed a
sorted version of the file input.
But when I try to view it with less or more, I can't see anything.
Also when I try to sdiff it with another file, sdiff treats it as if it
were blank...
same thing happens if I try doing it as
sort input > output
any clues would be most gratefully received :-)
I'm on a Redhat Linux 4.2 kernel 2.0.30 (if that makes any difference)
Eric
