Yo could cludge it a little if the toy will always be connected to a
private subnet.  If it is, then with a bit of care, you could ensure
that you always use the same IP and gateway (eg. you are always
192.168.1.33, and your gateway is always 192.168.1.1).

Well this is the sort of thing that NIS (and friends) do - though they
are more intended to keep keep all the clients up-to-date with the
central repository.  Once you have the IP sorted out, I can't see why
you couldn't have one of these set up at each site to give you what you
need.
