[H-GEN] Beware the JabberRIMy my friend (X2/K56Flex/V90)

I was actually working at Telstra a few years ago when these things were being
put in, and helped do the design work (read - connect this black box to these
cables, turn on, and test according to some book I don't understand. Design
means totally different things in Telstra to the rest of the world).
RIMs (Remote Integrated Multiplexor) were designed to be an extension of an
exchange, and in theory, should give you equivalent service as if you were
connected directly to the exchange by copper. Think of it as physically
locating part of the switching equipment out in the streets, and just run the
high speed 2Mbps fibre straight into the switcher. Only one A/D between you
and the Exchange. Hence the title Remote Integrated Multiplexor.
Very nice indeed
Except that the software we used to record (not control) such things couldn't
handle, so they decided to demultiplex the signal from 2Mbps back to 30
individual signals, and then feed them into the switch, which would convert it
to 2Mbps again, for a total of 3 D/A or A/D changes.
When they finally got their recording software working properly, they started
installing something they termed IRIM (Integrated Remote Integrated
Multiplxors), which works the way it was meant. Meanwhile, there are probably
still quite a few RIMs still around in the streets.
In any case, Telstra only guarantees 9600 baud down their lines, so at 19k2,
they would probably say you're lucky. Stiff cheddar about your 56k modem.
System-12 and RIMs are also made by different companies, and are a bugger to
get to work properly.
Hope there's no Telstra big nobs out there, as that was probably
Commercial-in-Confidence. If my house turns into a smoking ruin, you know they
probably tracked me down.
