[H-GEN] AURGH!!! mail problems

Using fetchmail (This is fetchmail release 3.8 pl 0) and smail
(Smail-3.2 (#2 1996-Nov-26)) I came across something *very* worrying:

I downloaded 19 messages from my POP account, as usual.  fetchmail
reported them as successfully downloaded and (damnit) successfully
flushed.

They vanished.

They didn't show up in any of my mailboxen (procmail distributes
them), and they didn't even show up in the smail logs.

I can't find them, or any *trace* of them, anywhere.

Does anyone have any idea, even the slightest clue, as to what the
fsck happened to my mail??

I immediately created a test message, which downloaded just fine ..
