About the printer drivers...

Which distribution you have would be the best guide to what to do.
Ghostscript would probably have a 'compatible' driver, but the real
art is setting up the print filter to convert text/ps to the ESC/P
commands.  I have done this one time a while ago, but there are
packages that will help.

Have a look at the distribution printer setup or check out

I have heard that magicfilter is good.
	
About X screen blanking...

It is a normal X11R6 option controllable by xset.  Do a 'man xset'
and then have a go at

	xset s noblank
