Hi all,

Here are a few comments on Applixware and Word Perfect for Linux:

We (Plugged In) have been using Applixware for about two years. 
Additionally, Bernadette Hyland of PI used to use Applixware on Sun
Solaris to create GUIs for realtime trading applications in California. 
Applixware is great at realtime data transfer (not commonly used for
general desktop use and an expensive optional extra anyway), but it's
GUI is aging badly.  It does well with general word processing and
includes a good spreadsheet and decent drawing tool.  It really needs
more filters for export/import, but the nature of filters is to be
behind the times by 6 months to 2 years.

I just tried Word Perfect 7 for Linux from Corel.  It seems to be a very
good word processor and more modern than Applix's.  It also includes a
good drawing tool - but this is unintuitive until you get used to it. 
WP7 has basic filters as well, but WP8 should be available on Linux
soon.

WP also has full macro support and the ability to view the markup tags. 
Their HTML tool looks better than the M$ Word or Applix ones.

One thing that bothers me about both packages is their poor or
non-existent table of contents generators.  M$ Word is very good at this
and we need it for the many large documents that we create.

Having looked at SoftWindows (expensive because you need a Solaris box
to run Win32 apps), WABI (limited to old Win16 apps), Applixware and
Word Perfect, I think that we will end up using Word Perfect for word
processing, and WABI + M$ Excel for spreadsheets.
