[H-GEN] [UQCSA] looking for programmers for BrainWave projects (fwd)

BrainWave is how I made a living during Honours last year. The work is not
all that difficult (besides Java being a fast moving and often frustrating
target!). Note that the work is on a project-by-project basis. I believe
the rates are HEW 5 by the expected time to complete.

Cheers,

Raymond.

Subject: [UQCSA] looking for programmers for BrainWave projects

Expanding on my previous call for people to aid with BrainWave projects:

BrainWave is a artificial neural network simulator developed at the University
of Queensland for teaching connectionist modelling. BrainWave employs a
highly graphical, direct manipulation interface - much like a drawing program
(see http://psy.qu.edu.au/~brainwav). Versions 1.0 and 1.1 of BrainWave
were written in Java 1.0.2.. We are currently upgrading to Java 1.1.6 and
have a number of projects available:

Project 1: Display Output

Currently all of the screen objects in BrainWave are displayed in colour. On
black & white terminals this can create difficulties. For this reason,
BrainWave 1.1 included an option for rendering the screen in black and white
and we would like to duplicate that functionality in BrainWave 2.0. The first
part of this project would involve including the black & white option as part of
the paint routine of the main objects including units, weights, pattern sets
and buttons. Since the colour paint code already exists this will mainly
involve choosing appropriate colour mappings and identifying and fixing any
ambiguities that arise from rendering in black & white. The second part of the
project involves outputting the current screen in postscript. Again, the
existing colour painting code can be adapted for the task. In addition, we
already have a postscript object which produces postscript for drawing
primitives such as lines and text. Consequently, the project will not require
an extensive understanding of postscript.

Value: $340
Duration: ~ 16 hours
Required Completion Date: July 7th

Project 2: Pattern Set Editor

BrainWave stores collections of values used by its algorithms in entities
called pattern sets. This project will involve writing a simple spreadsheet
interface to facilitate the editing of pattern sets. In addition, the editor
should allow the writing and reading of text files of pattern set data.

Value: $510
Duration ~ 24 hours
Required Completion Date: June 31st

Project 3: Promoting the release of BrainWave 2.0

Upon completion of BrainWave 2.0 we intend to conduct a promotional campaign.
This project would involve preparing for that campaign. The first part would
involve searching the world wide web for appropriate sites on which BrainWave
could be advertised or for which link exchanges might be appropriate. The
second part would involve organizing a snail mailout, including compiling a
mailing list (by searching the web), the production of a colour brochure and
conducting the mailout. The third part of the project would involve an email
mailout, including identifying existing emailing lists, compiling an email mailing
list, producing the email to be distributed and conducting the mailout. Please
note the objective here is to carefully target people who are likely to be
interested.

Value: $340
Duration: ~ 16 hours
Required Completion Date: July 14th

The next four projects involve extending existing BrainWave objects to add new
activation and learning algorithms. While an understanding of neural networks
would be an advantage in these projects, all of the algorithms are simple, well
defined and are the subject of textbook chapters or single papers. A
mathematically competent person would have no difficult implementing them.

Project 4: Adaptive Resonance Theory (ART) architecture

Value: $680
Duration: ~ 32 hours
Required Completion Date: July 14th

Project 5: Boltzmann Machine

Value: $680
Duration: ~ 32 hours
Required Completion Date: July 14th

Project 6: ALCOVE

Value: $680
Duration ~ 32 hours
Required Completion Date: July 14th

Project 7: Synchronous Fireflies

Value: $680
Duration: ~ 32 hours
Required Completion Date: July 14th
