A good start is the tutorial at:
http://agora.leeds.ac.uk/nik/
I noticed that agora.leeds.ac.uk was offline this morning, but they
are normally there.
This tutorial is easy to follow (and quick to run through), and gives
you enough of the basics that you can easily start using perl
scripts, and even start using it for CGI if you understand the basics
of that.
It will also give you a good enough idea of Perl that you will
understand better what you really need in a Perl book.
