You seem to have a bit of a problem here. To my knowledge nobody has
written an X-Windows server for the i740 chip. Generally, distributions
of Linux (such as Red Hat or Debian) do not write drivers or servers,
they just include those written by others (usually the XFree
organisation).
It appears that (at last report) Intel may be co-operating to get an X
Windows server, but to my knowledge nobody can get the spec on the i740
chips and thus cannot write a server. At least Intel seem to have
"discovered" Linux so you may have some luck.
One of the problems with new chipsets and X Windows is that it usually
takes 6-12 months for a new server to appear.
Over recent times, SuSe have been working on support for newer chipsets
but, to my knowledge, they do not have one for the i740. My
understanding is that the i740 won't work even with the generic servers.
If you want to part with mucho $$$ I believe Xi Graphics have a server
but that is a pretty expensive solution. Maybe Metro X has a solution
too - have not looked.
Here is something you could try (cut from a news group)
------------------------------------------------------------
Before you pony up a bunch of cash to XiGraphics, and *if* your card is
supported by XFree86, try the `Option "xaa_no_color_exp"' in the Device
section of your XF86Config file.
--------------------------------------------------------------
Hope it helps, good luck.
