Don't want much do you ;>...Good luck, I don't see too many of them in
my travels. Presumably, you may want Intels for SMP but, if you don't
want Intels particularly, I think it is better value to get IBM new
233's for $123 or better in volume. Even P75's bring good money second
hand. I find that new P166 chips currently won't get much below the
$100+ mark as it becomes uneconomic to market them. Often. when Intel
are going to discontinue a chip they discourage purchase by pricing the
lowest chip at $1 or so dearer than the second lowest as they did with
the 166 and 200 in April. A significant period after they become
obsolete they are still highly priced as those people with old bioses
often cannot use the currently available chips (eg the DX/4-100 chips
are over the top, if you can get them).
I notice (Pricewatch web page) that 166's are still available in the US
for $89 (ie about $170+ landed in Australia, including freight and sales
tax). I reckon if you could get a 166 for under $100 second hand you
would be doing Ok. If any of these become available the second level
dealer (second-hand computers/Sunday market sales types) will snap them
up to build a system pretty quickly. I have never seen 166's as
components at auctions, only full systems. Even P75's as components are
rare, although some chip/motherboard/memory combinations are starting to
appear.
