Hello world,

This just in:

==========
LINUX '98 SHIPS

LINUX.KERNEL.ORG (24 April 1998) -- Today, Linux '98 was released to the
world, by Finnish hacker Linus Torvalds. Linux '98 is a minor update to
the '97 release that was released five days ago. Enhancements include
bug fixes in the area of IDE and SCSI device lockups, and better support
for low memory machines.

Unnamed sources report that the decision to release '98 came after
Torvalds was told of Bill Gates (CEO Mircrosoft, Inc) assertion that the
reason Windows 98 remained unreleased was the still significant stability
problems the long awaited update is experiencing. Torvalds is said to
have exclaimed, ``Is that all we're waiting for?!'' and promptly uploaded
the nine megabytes of compressed sources to ftp sites around the world,
for eager Linux users to download.

Torvalds is currently keeping the development of the Linux kernel oriented
firmly on robustness and reliability, aiming towards a bug free 2.2.0
release.

Background
----------

The Linux kernel has two concurrent release streams, a stable stream
and a release stream. Version numbers are specified as a dotted triple
(eg 2.1.98) where the middle number is even if the release is stable,
and odd if the release is a development release. The current stable
release is 2.0.33, while the current development release, Linux '98, is
2.1.98. The development kernels improve most of the major subsytems of
the kernel (disk handling, networking, and so forth) in both functionality
and efficiency.

Availability
------------

Linux '98 is available from ftp sites the world over.

Cheers,
aj, who has just install Linux '98 on azure, and felt inspired
